Ctenopharynx intermedius can be found in entire Lake Malawi. They are living in rocky environments with lots of sediment and in the intermediate zones from rocks to sand, you can also find them in open water but most of the times you can find them above the sandbottom in the neighbourhood of rocks. These examples were caught in the neighbourhood of Makokola Reef. The males of these species can grow to about 22 cm in the lake, females grow to about 16 cm. In the aquarium however they can grow a little taller because of a good feeding. In an aquarium Ctenopharynx intermedius is behaving reasonable tolerant against other inhabitants, against equal species however sometimes they behave a bit agressive. You can best keep this species with multiple females and other species from equal environments, in a large tank with a lot of swimming space. In the lake Ctenopharynx intermedius are feeding themselves with insect larvae and small invertebrates which they find in the sediment on the bottom and they also eat plankton which they dispatch just a little above the sandbottom. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. |
